DIRECTOR OF COMMUNICATIONS

Position Summary
The Director of Communications will be responsible for “earned media” by building relationships with journalists, pitching stories, and developing hooks for mainstream and progressive news outlets. Experience with online media – blogs, viral content, Flash automation – a big plus. The individual will design creative communications plans for a small, fast-growing non-profit organization. Successful candidates will also have experience with public relations efforts that supplement programmatic intiaitives, sich as social marketing and other “cause-oriented” campaigns that change attitudes, beliefs and behaviors “on the ground.” Experience in diverse communtieis – especially communiites of color – a plus. Ideal for strong candidate who wants a fast-growing organization where they can define their own position and run their own shop.

Position Qualifications

  • The candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years’ communications experience. Candidates must be well organized, detail-oriented and have a proven experience in a fast-paced setting. Experience with communications planning is a must, S/he must have very strong verbal and written interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. Experience with staff management and oversight in a progressive nonprofit setting is preferred. In particular, the individual should have public speaking experience or skills, be able to represent the organization in a variety of settings and exceptional strength in the area of media relations. Must have experience with cause-oriented and social marketing as well as the online resources to support non-profit campaigns.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop & Maintain relationships with key journalists;
  • Create organization-wide as well as program-specific communications and media plans;
  • Proactively seek out related news items, seed news stories, and issue releases on news items as well as organizational accomplishments;
  • Assist in organizational marketing through publicity opportunities;
  • Assist with member communication, internal communication strategy, and all aspects of the organization's public face; and
  • Assist in branding efforts
  • Create innovative social marketing campaigns to supplement organizing efforts on teh ground.
