Violence Prevention Program At-a-Glance
GenderPAC's Violence Prevention Program works to prevent violence caused by gender stereotypes by changing public attitudes, educating elected officials, and expanding legal rights.
Specifically, GenderPAC works with a broad coalition of bipartisan organizations on Capitol Hill to educate the public, raise media awareness of prominent hate crimes, and educate Congress Members and other elected officials on the need for law and public policy that will discourage gender-based violence, in particular the Local Law Enforcement Enhancement Act (LLEEA or the "Hate Crimes Act.")
Recent Accomplishments
- Visited over 60 Congressional offices during our 2004 National Gender Lobby Days to educate them about the need for legislation like LLEEA that will expand federal jurisdiction to hate crimes based on victim's "actual or perceived gender." View information about LLEEA and hate crimes.
- Filed an amicus brief in support of JoAnn Brandon's wrongful death suit in the murder of her son, Brandon. View HTML version or Research your state laws.
- Publicized the shooting death of Willie Houston in Nashville, TN, and the beating death of Fred Martinez, Jr. in Cortez, CO. Read interviews with Pauline Mitchell -- Fred Martinez's mother, and Nedra Jones -- Willie Houston's fiancé.
